According to a study published in Frontiers in Medicine, "of all dietary supplements, vitamin C is the only one for which the most commonly reported motivation for its use...is 'to boost immune system, prevent cold'". A 2013 review of 29 trials which involved more than 11,300 people found "no consistent effect of vitamin C ... on the duration or severity of colds," and yet Vitamin C is the standard supplement people turn to when they start to feel sick. At Hardy Nutritionals, we are not surprised by this news. We believe in broad-spectrum supplementing, using a balanced combination of all the essential vitamins and minerals together, rather than just one at a time.
Using just one vitamin or mineral at a time can actually throw off your micronutrient balance and rob you of the full benefits of supplementing. In an award-winning textbook published by the APA, researchers commented that, "At least 10, preferably more (25 or so) vitamins and minerals" were key to staying balanced. "A broader range of micronutrients is more likely to provide more pervasive changes..." the authors wrote.

The broad-spectrum approach to supplementing is not new. In fact, there have been studies done which found that not only did the use of clinical levels of micronutrients help with overall health, they were able to find relief from serious stress associated with natural disasters that affected entire populations of people in specific regions. One such study, entitled "Shaken but unstirred? Effects of micronutrients on stress and trauma after an earthquake: RCT evidence comparing formulas and doses", found that by taking a predecessor version† of Daily Essential Nutrients, study participants who had survived a massive earthquake in New Zealand were significantly improved in the areas of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms compared to those in the control group.
Another similar study looked at the impact on people with ADHD who supplemented with the broad-spectrum micronutrients after surviving a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. During a time when stress and anxiety would typically cause a major disruption in the lives of people with ADHD, those who participated in the study "were more resilient to the effects of the earthquake" compared to the control group not taking the supplement.
