Dr. Tummala, Psychiatrist, Discusses Micronutrients for Mental Health

Dr. Aruna Tummala is a board-certified psychiatrist and founder of Trinergy Center for Integrative Psychiatry in New Berlin, Wisconsin. Dr. Tummala is also board certified in Integrative and Holistic Medicine by the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine. In this video interview, Dr. Tummala discusses her patients' experience using Daily Essential Nutrients, which is a clinical-strength broad-spectrum formulation produced by Hardy Nutritionals.

Inspired by the realization that conventional psychiatry has become a linear, medication-dependent, symptoms-based model, Dr. Tummala turned to Integrative Psychiatry, fully embracing its patient-centered, collaborative care approach. Unlike conventional psychiatry, Integrative Psychiatry attempts to find the root cause of a person’s problems and work towards achieving overall mental health and balance.

At Trinergy Center for Integrative Psychiatry, Dr. Tummala works with patients to treat mental health problems using a holistic, or whole body, approach.

Rather than just addressing the symptoms of mental illness, Dr. Tummala uses a broad scope of intervention, including diet, exercise, meditation, nutritional supplements such as Hardy's Daily Essential Nutrients, psychotherapy, and careful use of psychiatric medicines. She recognizes that reducing the reliance on psychiatric medicines reduces the severity and occurrence of side effects while empowering her patients to find balance.

Dr. Tummala first heard of DEN from Dr. Scott Shannon, renowned author and integrative psychiatrist who has found success using these micronutrients with children who have ADHD and psychosis.  Dr. Tummala shares that most of her patients notice differences in their mental health symptoms within three to four weeks of consistently taking Daily Essential Nutrients.  She has found it to be useful for patients with autism, schizophrenia, depression, psychosis and bipolar disorder.  She notices improvements in apathy and motivation in patients taking DEN, and has had a couple of patients who started taking DEN and discontinued after a time, only to have their symptoms reappear.

Dr. Tummala has authored and presented on the topics of mental illness, Ayurveda, and integrative approaches to mental illness to academic audiences both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Tummala was a resident psychiatrist for the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, and then a Fellow in Geriatric Psychiatry for the same organization.

She received her MD in Psychiatry in 2003 from the Deemed University, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, India. She was recognized for excellence and was the recipient of three awards during her undergraduate medical education at the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary, India.
