Micronutrients Research Update: Dr. Kaplan Wins Dr. Rogers Prize

Dr. Bonnie Kaplan has dedicated nearly two decades of her life and professional career to studying the effects of broad-spectrum micronutrients on people with mood and mental health disorders.  She has published multiple studies on a wide range of health topics as they relate to micronutrient supplementation including ADHD, stress, PTSD, pregnancy, depression, anxiety, and more.

In September of 2019, Dr. Kaplan was recognized for her work in micronutrient treatment and mental health research by receiving the prestigious Dr. Rogers Prize.  This award honors significant contributors in the field of complementary, alternative and integrative health.  Dr. Kaplan was awarded $250,000, most of which she says she is donating to the charitable funds she established in 2015 for the purpose of supporting more research on micronutrients for mental health.

Micronutrients Research Funding

The Nutrition and Mental Health Research Fund at the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care (FEMHC), is being used to support clinical trials of micronutrients for children who have a diagnosis of ADHD and mood dysregulation, and for adults with bipolar disorder. Now, FEMHC has received a matching grant to expand its programs. When a donation of $100 is given to the FEMHC, the donation will be matched.

Dr. Rucklidge was influential in helping the following studies get underway.  She has served as a mentor for a number of the researchers involved in these trials.

New Research: MTHFR and Micronutrients

    Dr. Julia Rucklidge’s research group at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, has published investigations on the mechanisms that might explain the relationship between nutrition and mental health. They have shown that MTHFR status and baseline serum levels of nutrients were not good predictors of who would benefit clinically from broad-spectrum micronutrient treatment [2]. In other words, the best way so far to find out whether broad-spectrum micronutrients are beneficial is just to try them. Also, this research group seems to be the first one ever to demonstrate that micronutrients exerted a detectable effect (though small) on the expression of genes (often called epigenetics) [3]. And most recently they have demonstrated that micronutrient treatment improved diversity of the microbiome in children who participated in one of their clinical trials [4]. This recent finding is a small pilot study, and will surely lead to other research.

    Significant Improvements Found in MADDY Trial

    The MADDY Trial, formally known as the "Micronutrients for ADHD Youth" research study is testing Daily Essential Nutrients' effectiveness in assisting children with ADHD who are not taking medication. 

    The MADDY study is a collaboration of colleagues at the University of CalgaryOregon Health and Sciences University, and The Ohio State University.  Researcher Dr. Brenda Leung is assessing the safety and effectiveness of Hardy Nutritionals' flagship formulation, Daily Essential Nutrients.

    The study is a follow-up to over 40 independent medical journal publications, many of which were conducted in New Zealand, the U.S., and Canada, examining broad-spectrum micronutrients and their effects on ADHD, anxiety, stress, depression and bipolar disorder.  

    As with all previous studies on Hardy Nutritionals® micronutrient formulations, funding is from independent sources.  Funding for this research has been provided by grants through the Calgary Foundation and the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care, a community foundation based in the U.S. that connects donors from around the world to independent research projects and innovations in psychiatry.

    The investigators from the MADDY trial have begun to make some videotapes of some of the children whose lives have been transformed by the micronutrient treatment.  

    Several months ago, Victor joined the "Micronutrients for ADHD Youth" research study at Oregon Health & Sciences University, nicknamed the MADDY study.  The study is testing Daily Essential Nutrients, a micronutrient complex formulated by Hardy Nutritionals®, and DEN's effectiveness in assisting children with ADHD who are not taking medication.

    In this inside look, Victor's parents share that their son is experiencing big changes.  He is less defiant and is having less trouble at school.  In fact, the school used to call up to six times per day; but since they have undertaken the micronutrient regime, these problems no longer haunt Victor and his family.

    Victor's mom shares, "There were times when he wasn't being safe...he would throw chairs and throw pencils, it was very, very stressful.  There is an amazing difference now."

    His parents cite a lot of improvement and say they chose the micronutrients because they wanted something natural for their son.  Victor says that he used to have trouble putting together his Legos.  "I'm less frustrated than I used to be.  I always used to yell and scream because I didn't get to finish my Legos."

    His mom credits the Daily Essential Nutrients micronutrients with enabling her family to do more things together because Victor is now able to control himself a lot better.
